“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office; So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith.”(Romans 12:4-6)
In this section of discipleship there are two objectives. First, lets identify our personal talents and gifts to the Lord and the ministry. Secondly, let’s commit ourselves to serve God in a specific capacity in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead.
Gifts differ from talents. Talents are God-given, natural, a part of the created order. Gifts are received through the Holy Spirit. Both talents and gifts can be used to serve God. Gifts are roles or special abilities, different and distinct and achievable through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit distributes these gifts diversely to each disciple. Below are seven (7) gifts listed in Romans 12 and I. Corinthians 12.
Apostles: This gift is to exercise general oversight and leadership in the church. A person called to apostolic ministry shows signs of spiritual power to lead others to Christ, to encourage, and to build up others in faith and love.
Prophets:A prophet is one who speaks for God. The spiritual gift is to receive and communicate a message of God to the people. Prophets may focus on exhortation, encouragement, consolation, or on conviction, confrontation, and social change.
Teachers:The church truly needs Christ-like teachers. Not just those who are scholastically and professionally trained to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic; but those who are specially gifted to teach the Word of God.
Miracle Workers: Some people are gifted with power to perform miracles, signs, and wonders. People who work wonders release sometimes-tormented individuals from fear or guilt or grief.
Healers: Some people walk into a sick room, and patients feel better. Countless Christians testify that the prayers of the church helped heal them, sometimes with laying on of hands, receiving Holy Communion, or anointing oil.
Helpers:Helping lubricates the gears, making the church life active, abundant, and joyous. To be called a “son of encouragement” is to be highly praised. A gifted helper says yes even at some personal sacrifice or inconvenience.
Administrators The gift of administration is the ability God gives to certain members of the body of Christ to establish goals and to devise and execute plans to accomplish those goals.
Identify your personal talent and gift to the Lord and the ministry. Commit yourself to serve God in a specific capacity in the days ahead.
